The campaign in Gears of War: E-Day follows Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, Mags Carter, and Lucas Reyes through the first three days of the Locust invasion in Kalona. It is a prequel about the beginning of the Locust War and the formation of Bravo Squad, not a remake of the original Gears of War. On Steam, the campaign belongs to the base game with AppID 3010850. The game is scheduled to release on October 6, 2026, while Premium Edition advance access is advertised for October 1.
Scope checkpoint — checked August 8, 2026: the Steam base game is still listed as coming soon and has no publicly stated semantic version. This hub covers only story, characters, locations, play features, and mechanics disclosed by The Coalition, Xbox, or Steam. Chapter names, mission order, collectibles, achievements, boss order, difficulty rewards, game length, and the ending are not yet public enough for a walkthrough.
What the campaign is about
E-Day begins after the Pendulum Wars have ended and Sera has experienced peace for the first time in almost eighty years. Marcus and Dom are in Kalona for an armistice memorial rather than a combat deployment. The situation changes when the ground opens and the Locust emerge. The Coalition describes the story as two origins at once: the start of the Locust War and the beginning of the brotherhood players later recognize between Marcus and Dom.
The campaign stays with Bravo Squad. The official Xbox Wire feature says the story does not cut away to an all-seeing global perspective; players discover the invasion through what this four-person squad sees and learns. That keeps the scale readable even though Emergence Day is happening across the surface of Sera. Kalona is the continuous center of the story, and the city falls over a span of three days.
The announced emotional structure moves from confusion and fear on the first night, to regrouping and organized response on the second day, to desperation on the third. That is a broad official shape, not a chapter list. Any page claiming exact missions or a complete ending before the playable release build should be treated as speculation.
Meet Bravo Squad
Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago enter the story as young veterans of the Pendulum Wars. They are already connected by military service and personal loss, but E-Day is designed to show how their better-known partnership takes shape under a new kind of war.
Mags Carter is a former Gear who works at Kalona’s Imulsion Refinery when the invasion begins. Lucas Reyes is a young cadet and communications officer who wanted front-line experience but had not seen it during the previous war. Both are playable campaign characters, not temporary multiplayer skins presented as story leads.
The four run toward danger when Wretches erupt into the city, forming the group that becomes Bravo Squad. The official campaign presentation also confirms appearances by other defenders, including Tai Kaliso, but it does not publish a complete cast or say that every familiar Gears character participates.
Kalona is one connected setting, not an open world
The campaign takes place in Kalona, a fictional coastal city shaped by stadiums, an industrial waterfront, an airfield, dense neighborhoods, and the refineries that sustain it. The developers have explicitly said E-Day is not an open-world game. The city is built to feel continuous, however, so missions can move between tight streets, interiors, wider districts, rooftops, and flanking spaces without feeling like unrelated destinations.
That distinction matters when planning a first playthrough. Players should expect authored campaign progression rather than a map full of freely selectable regions. The public footage and articles support more room to approach combat positions, not unrestricted world travel or a published mission-select structure.
Environmental destruction is part of the storytelling. E-holes can open during encounters, sinkholes can pull down vehicles or buildings, and low cover can be damaged. These mechanics give the invasion physical weight, but the official material has not yet provided a collectible route or guaranteed destruction solution for every encounter.
How combat differs from older Gears games
Cover remains the foundation. E-Day adds a wider range of cover heights and shapes, including low protection that can leave a character more exposed. Movement now includes sprint-to-slide actions, jumping, climbing, mantling without first entering cover, and passage through some low gaps. Cover entry retains speed, but its commitment and momentum are intended to make movement more readable than extreme cancel chains in earlier titles.
Gunplay uses simulated projectile travel rather than treating every shot as instant. Players can shoulder-swap while aiming, and some weapons reward burst control or leading a distant target. The Gnasher and Breechshot use a round-by-round reload option, while the Prototype Lancer, Hammerburst, Longshot, Retro Lancer, and several new weapons have publicly described roles.
A safe preparation plan is therefore simple:
- Learn the default movement and cover bindings in the launch build instead of importing an old game’s control chart.
- Use Boot Camp or Combat Training for the shared sandbox before changing several settings at once.
- Read each arena for cover height, gaps, climbable edges, and a retreat path before pushing.
- Match weapon range to the lane and remember that projectiles may require lead at distance.
- Recheck difficulty and accessibility options in the shipping menus; the final names and defaults are not yet documented here.
Campaign co-op on Steam
The full campaign supports up to four-player online co-op, and any member of Bravo Squad can be played from the start according to the official campaign feature. Steam lists Online Co-op for AppID 3010850. The PC version does not support local split-screen. The announced two-player split-screen feature applies to console, so connecting two controllers to the Steam build should not be presented as a supported workaround.
For the platform-specific breakdown, squad setup, and common purchase misunderstanding, use the Campaign co-op guide. The key decision is whether every Steam participant has access to the base game and can join online; a single Steam purchase does not create a local second seat.
What can safely be planned before release
Players can choose an edition, confirm storage and hardware requirements, decide whether they need online campaign partners, and learn the new sandbox in public multiplayer training or Beta contexts. They cannot responsibly plan a chapter-by-chapter collectible run yet. The Steam store currently requires a Windows PC, DirectX 12, a hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU, and 130 GB of SSD space; those values should be checked again near launch because store requirements can change.
Premium Edition changes the access date and adds specified digital items. It does not create a separate campaign AppID or a different story canon. The Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack is described as Campaign-only content, but public sources do not support treating it as a new weapon family or a requirement for completion.
Avoid these pre-release campaign traps
- Do not confuse E-Day with Gears of War: Reloaded (Steam AppID 2523720), Gears 5, or the original 2006 game’s mission structure.
- Do not convert the official three-day story span into a claim about three acts, three chapters, or a three-hour length.
- Do not infer Steam split-screen from the console feature.
- Do not publish a “complete walkthrough,” boss order, collectible map, save path, or achievement list until the release build can be checked.
- Do not use Steam user tags such as Open World or Local Co-op as proof when first-party feature descriptions say otherwise.
- Do not treat a Beta behavior from AppID 4059240 as confirmation of campaign difficulty, checkpoints, AI, or final performance.
Campaign FAQ
Is E-Day a remake or Gears 6?
Neither label describes the announced product. It is a new prequel set on Emergence Day and built around Marcus, Dom, Mags, Lucas, and Kalona.
Can all four campaign characters be selected from the beginning?
The official Xbox Wire feature says the entire campaign can be played as any Bravo Squad character from the start and supports four-player online co-op. Final lobby flow and save ownership still need launch-build verification.
Is Kalona open world?
No. The developers explicitly describe E-Day as not open world. The city is designed as a cohesive place with encounters that can offer larger spaces and alternate approaches.
When will a full walkthrough be useful?
After Premium advance access begins on October 1, 2026, and again after the standard release on October 6. A credible walkthrough needs observed mission names, objectives, checkpoints, difficulty, collectibles, and the exact Steam build context.
