Gears of War: E-Day Active Reload Guide

Learn E-Day's Active Reload decisions, including round-by-round Gnasher and Breechshot loading, Perfect timing tests, and mode-specific risk.

Active Reload returns in Gears of War: E-Day, while the Gnasher and Breechshot gain a round-by-round version. Instead of always waiting for a complete shotgun reload, the player can decide how many shells the next fight requires and attempt an Active result during that recovery.

The official gameplay update explains the design direction but does not publish a permanent frame table, bonus value, or identical rule for every weapon. Learn the live meter and keep mode, build, and mods attached to every timing claim.

Decide whether the next action needs one shell or a full reserve

Count threats, objective state, cover safety, and teammate coverage. One shell can finish an immediate close enemy or protect a revive. A full reserve is better before a wave, long Demolition hold, or extraction defense.

The six-shell Gnasher makes the trade visible. Remaining in cover to fill every shell can miss the objective window; returning with too little ammunition can force another exposed reload.

Say “reloading” when the lane matters. A teammate can cover the gap instead of assuming the shotgun remains ready.

Practice normal, Active, and Perfect outcomes separately

Use Boot Camp or Combat Training. First complete a normal reload and observe when the weapon becomes usable. Then attempt the Active region. Finally test the Perfect window only after the base timing is repeatable.

Record the weapon, starting ammunition, shells loaded, input device, mode, public build, and any Horde mod. Do not estimate frames from a compressed web video.

If a failed attempt creates a jam or delay in the current build, measure it separately. Consistent normal timing can be the better choice during a decisive objective.

Understand weapon-specific behavior

The gameplay article explicitly gives the round-by-round system to the Gnasher and returning Breechshot. It also says a Perfect Active Reload increases the Hammerburst’s fire rate. These examples do not prove every gun receives the same bonus.

Some effects can modify ammunition, rate, or another property. Read the live weapon feedback. Never shorten “increased fire rate after Perfect Active” into “more damage” unless damage itself is verified.

The Prototype Lancer, Snub, Longshot, Gut Puncher, Incinerator, and Heavy Weapons need their own current-build reload observations.

Reload from useful cover

Choose cover that blocks the actual threat and offers an exit. Low cover can leave a large enemy’s attack exposed. A familiar wall can become unsafe when another Horde squad’s fight changes the rear lane or TDM dynamic spawns shift.

Shoulder swap outside cover before re-peeking. E-Day’s movement momentum means beginning a slide or jump during the reload can commit the player beyond safety.

In co-op, alternate reloads across the squad so every lane is not empty simultaneously.

Keep Horde Mods in their own test

Armor Mods can add conditional effects such as Perfect Active ammunition from executions, while Weapon Mods can change weapon functionality. Test the unmodified weapon first, then one named mod at a time.

Record the class level, mod description, difficulty, and objective. Weapon customization is shared across Horde classes using the same weapon, which makes the exact equipped state important.

Versus disables Weapon Mods. A Horde Perfect Active setup should never be presented as Ranked behavior.

Use reload windows by mode

In Campaign, listen for squad pressure and preserve a secondary weapon for a close interruption. In Horde, connect the reload to the R.I.G., tag recovery, and extraction reserve. In TDM, a failed reload spends a team life if the fight is untradeable. In Conquest, staying off the active zone for a full reserve can hand over progress.

Demolition has high-cost no-respawn plant fights, so complete preparation before the plant. Crucible’s carrier escort must not leave the Core unsupported while every player reloads.

The input is the same kind of action, but the cost of waiting changes with the win condition.

Diagnose a missed reload

Separate input timing, unsafe cover, wrong ammunition decision, and mode pressure. A perfect meter hit can still be a bad decision if the team needed movement. A normal reload can be correct if it keeps the player alive.

Use the results screen and a short practice clip when debugging. Do not publish a universal timing until it reproduces at normal framerate and after a build update.

Aim for reliable availability first, then optimization.
